In the years 1896-1904, while working on Jenůfa (Her Stepdaughter), the key work that opened the floodgates
of his creative invention, Leoš Janáček created a group of four small cantatas,
which are included in this volume: Hear
Me, O Lord ! 1, Hear Me, O Lord! 2, Our Father (1906), Elegy, Ave
Maria. In the third volume of the Hudební
listy journal, Janáček published an extensive theoretical study On the Idea of Tonality which touches a
wide range of historical sources, especially in the chapter On the Chorale Harmonization, where he
dealt with the song Hospodine, pomiluj ny.
